ÆTHER/MASS — Available through The Orb

The Cubist Chair is composed of four identical upholstered volumes arranged into a single, balanced structure. Each element retains its autonomy, yet together they form a coherent object defined by mass and proportion rather than articulated parts.

The chair is built from a simple cubic geometry, repeated and repositioned to suggest a seat, back, and armrests without explicitly describing them. Function is present but understated, embedded within the overall volume rather than expressed through recognizable furniture components.

Viewed as a whole, the object oscillates between chair and sculpture. Its softened geometry and generous proportions emphasize stability and presence, allowing the chair to be read less as an assembly of parts and more as a single, composed form.

ÆTHER/MASS, Objects Where Function And Meaning Converge

ÆTHER/MASS is a Brussels-based design practice founded in 2022 by Davy Grosemans. Rooted in a belief in deep collaboration between designer and artisan, the practice explores what becomes possible when conceptual vision meets mastered craftsmanship.

It emerged from an understanding of collaboration not as a division of labour, but as a shared act of creation. At its core lies the alliance between designer and maker — an exchange that expands possibility by drawing on skills refined through years of dedication.
