The Bio

Deceres is a Mexico City– and California–based studio that reimagines the sacral and austere into approachable objects for everyday rituals. Monolithic forms, severe lines, and narrow voids — each infused with a quiet sense of religiosity and distilled through the lens of reductionism — create an ode to the tension between stark structure and delicate humanness.

Founded in 2020 by Denise Martinez and Jorge Arturo Ibarra, both rooted in Baja, Deceres grew out of a shared ethos shaped by years spent between Mexico and Southern California. This duality informs not only their outlook and approach to design, but also the physical manifestations of their own introspection.

Through close collaboration with artisans in Mexico and California, every piece is meticulously handcrafted, embracing the uniqueness of material and maker alike. The result is design with purposeful functionality — objects that stand out quietly, enhancing rather than competing with their surroundings.

In Conversation With

How do your relationships with the artisans and makers you work with shape the final form of a piece beyond what’s on the drawing?

Deceres is as much about learning about ourselves as it is about learning from others. The artisans and workshops we work with are responsible for bringing our ideas to life and the handmade element in each piece is crucial as it imbues every design with the unique craftsmanship of the beings involved. They are the experts, and we take their input very seriously. Often they will suggest a construction method, a production process or a patina technique, to better the quality of a piece. If it wasn't for them, our ideas would stay on paper, wouldn’t evolve or be possible.

How do your Mexican roots intertwine with Los Angeles life? What differences and synergies come into play when designing?

Growing up on the Tijuana / San Diego border we always had the sense that we were of two connected, yet separate, worlds where we didn’t fit neatly into either one. Currently we split our time between Mexico City and Southern California. This duality is a crucial element of Deceres designs. The constant flux between two distinct cultures has brought up many questions for us, but most importantly: “What if mesoamerican civilizations like the Maya and Aztec had continued to evolve alongside the western cultures and Abrahamic religions of today, instead of being disrupted by them? What would the furnishings inside of contemporary pyramids be like? What decorative objects would be found within those structures?” This question remains a predominant influence regardless of where we are located and our designs are what we imagine when attempting to answer these questions.

Was there a specific moment, person, or outside influence, that encouraged your decision to pursue design?

Jorge: My paternal grandfather has always been my biggest influence. He’s a baker by trade, but designed his bakeries, his home, and the home I grew up in. I have very clear memories of him constantly sketching floor plans or ideas for a cabinet or table. He’s 84 years old now and is currently building and designing a new home for himself. I’ve been extremely fortunate to grow up surrounded by creative people, they all just happened to be bakers or restaurateurs. I took a different path, but my family always encouraged me to pursue design and have always been incredibly supportive.

Denise: I grew up in a household with parents who studied architecture, engineering and construction. As long as I can remember I’ve been surrounded by the process of conceiving an idea and bringing it to fruition - a formula that shaped the procedural way in which I think and instilled an appreciation of any object, building, or surrounding. As a child of immigrants, I was equally as curious about social issues than design, which led me to initially pursue Economics and Education. It was during my time in New York City, away from my roots, that I realized that design brought me immense joy and that the stories of our reflections and history could be manifested in furniture and objects. Building Deceres is a life project that only makes sense when Jorge and I are working on it together.

You’ve been together for many years and also work closely together creatively. How does your relationship shape the way you approach design and develop ideas together?

We’ve known each other for about eighteen years and have been married for almost six. This only affects our creativity positively, as we work extremely well together. Every collection and design starts with a conversation. Many times it is about a memory or a certain realization of something from our past. We aim to materialize these conversations into designs.

We rarely, if ever, feel the need to compromise. We’re quite in sync, and creating together comes naturaly.
