Sculptural Furniture that Transcends Utility, Integrating Text-based Work onto Functional Objects

The Bio

American artist based in New York City. Her recent work surrounds the narrative of her traumatic brain injury in 2022. Over the course of her recovery she began writing. The process of writing prose and poetry has become complimentary to her love of making as words are engraved, etched, burnt or hammered into each piece. With a background in metal fabrication and inspired by a childhood spent in rural Maryland, her work intuitively combines varieties of stone, metal, wood and text. The inclusion of text ingrains a moment of time into the surfaces of her work, and invites the viewer into the artist's story, commemorating experiences during a long journey of pain, beauty and hope.

In Conversation with Caroline

Is there a ritual, a place, or a practice that helps you return to yourself and to inspiration?

Absolutely. My family has a farm in northern Maryland. It is my favorite place in the world. Luckily it isn’t far from where I live, so I go visit often. No matter what’s going on in my life, being there just feels good. I’m fortunate to have a home where I’m surrounded by love and beauty. There's also the aspect of work there ( it’s a working farm)- there's always something to be done so there's no sitting around all day overthinking things.

Choose one material you return to again and again. What memory does it carry for you?

For me it's always stone. I think everyone loves rocks. Like when little kids start collecting them, or
you find pebbles in their pockets. Rocks are just cool, no matter how you swing it. They can be
thousands or millions of years old. I think there's some sort of resonance of that which we can feel.
I don’t believe in crystals or anything, but I do freaking love rocks. I like to have them around me. It
reminds me of being outside all the time as a kid.

"I think I can communicate with a piece I’ve made way more effectively than having a conversation with someone."
