A Love Letter to Catalan Craftmanship

The Bio

Sheila Llovet is a Barcelona-born designer and founder of Obstacles, a furniture design studio that redefines the dialogue between space, material, and form. Her work is deeply influenced by her Mediterranean heritage and shaped by years living in Cape Town, Paris, and Belgium. Drawing from both Eastern and Western design philosophies, she creates pieces that embody quiet luxury, essential geometry, and timeless craftsmanship.

With a background in interior design, Sheila’s journey into furniture emerged from a desire to enhance architectural spaces with pieces that respect their surroundings. Her work emphasizes simplicity, stillness, and the enduring beauty of natural materials—rooted in a belief that true elegance lies in restraint.

Through Obstacles, Sheila presents a vision where furniture becomes a meaningful presence—crafted with intention, made to last, and always in harmony with its environment.

In Essence

Sheila Llovet is the creative force behind Obstacles. We entered her studio not merely to photograph the space, but to engage with it—touching, experiencing, and understanding her creations firsthand.

The visit became an opportunity to speak about her vision, future plans, and the conceptual thinking that shapes the brand.

Sheila Llovet’s path toward furniture design was not linear, nor intentional in the traditional sense. Trained and established in interior design, her practice grew from a close relationship with space, materials, and the everyday rituals that unfold within them.

Rather than separating interiors from objects, her work treats them as part of the same language—one where function, atmosphere, and emotion coexist. Obstacles emerged from this mindset, not as a standalone venture, but as a natural extension of a way of working.

Many of the brand’s first pieces originated during interior projects, developed initially as bespoke solutions for clients. Over time, certain elements began to stand on their own—objects that felt complete beyond the spaces they were designed for. These pieces slowly detached themselves from their original contexts, evolving into autonomous forms that would later become the foundation of the Obstacles collection. What began as practical responses gradually revealed a quieter, more universal presence.

When asked how she recognizes the moment a design becomes a new piece for the collection, her answer is intuitive rather than procedural. It’s a feeling. Some objects take time—waiting, growing slowly, demanding patience before they are ready to exist independently. Others appear almost effortlessly, as if already formed. In every case, intuition acts as the filter, guiding what belongs and what remains unresolved.

Materiality plays a central role in this process. Llovet works predominantly with wood, drawn to its warmth, its irregularities, and its ability to age with dignity. Wood allows her designs to remain grounded, tactile, and honest—never overly polished, never detached from their origins. The pieces retain a sense of calm restraint, shaped as much by what is left out as by what is included.
