Refined Brutalism - The Poetry of Tension and Form

The Bio

Jakub Kubica is a Slovak-born, Berlin-based artist and designer whose practice moves fluidly between sculpture, performance, and collectible design. Coming from a formal art education and a background in experimental, conceptual work, Kubica arrived at object-making organically — as an extension of his artistic explorations rather than a separate discipline.

In his studio-workshop on the outskirts of Berlin, he builds each piece by hand, treating the space as a small universe where materials, gestures, and ideas merge. His objects carry a distinctive poetic tension: raw stone meets precisely cut aluminum; natural irregularity contrasts with industrial clarity. What began as intuitive sculptural experiments has evolved into a body of refined, sophisticated furniture and functional objects — yet each retains the immediacy and honesty of the artist’s hand.

In Conversation

When you start a new piece, what matters most to you—how it’s used, how it feels, or the idea behind it?

When I start a new piece, the idea behind it comes first. Use and tactility follow naturally from that.

I’m interested in creating objects that carry a certain emotional weight, something quiet
but present, rather than solving purely functional problems.

You work a lot with stone, wood, and metal. What do you enjoy about these materials, and how do they influence the final shape of a piece?

I work a lot with stone, wood, and metal because they each carry very different energies. Sterile metal often functions as a magnifying glass, zooming in on the natural material and emphasizing its character. With my stone tables especially, the stones I find become silent collaborators, defining the final shape of the piece.

Can you describe how a piece usually comes together for you—from the first spark to knowing it’s finished?

Ideas are constantly flowing. Very often they emerge while I’m working in the atelier on more monotonous tasks. I feel an almost existential need to develop them further, it’s something I do primarily for my own pleasure, and it remains the most exciting part of my work.

Where do your ideas usually come from—objects you encounter, places you visit, or time spent working with materials in the studio?

My inspiration comes from nature, brutalist architecture, art, films, and music. I work in a rather surreal way, chasing certain timeless feelings… similar to reaching a mountain peak and being confronted with a humbling, expansive view.

Looking ahead, what are you curious to explore next in your work, or what do you feel drawn to change or develop?

Looking forward, I’m increasingly drawn to creating complete spaces. For example, listening rooms with my own speakers. Over time, I’ve developed a vocabulary across awide range of objects: tables, seating, lighting, speakers, shelving and designing an entire environment feels like a natural next step.
