Pushing the Boundaries with Transcontinental Flair

The Bio

Siete is a design studio based in Mexico City and Australia, dedicated to creating sculptural, spatial, and functional pieces that forge a direct and distinctive connection with their users.

"We are committed to pushing the boundaries of materiality, craftsmanship, conceptualization, and spatial experience. Each piece carries a story—shaped not only by its design, concept, and geometry but also by the very materials from which it is born. By working with naturally enduring elements such as wood, steel, resin, and glass, we aim to craft timeless pieces whose value deepens as they age."

Founded in 2020 by Gerardo Córdova, Alexa Fernández, and Diego Escobedo, Siete embodies a dialogue between innovation and tradition, seeking permanence in a world of transience.

The Conversation

Siete Studio is a shared language. How do you translate distinct sensibilities into one voice without losing tension or individuality?

We share one vision for Siete, but what makes us who we are is how differently we see the world. We come from distinct backgrounds, with unique perspectives and perceptions of what we’re drawn to and what we challenge through our work. At the core of Siete is the idea of duality and curiosity. We look to Ometeotl, the Nahua deity embodying the union of opposites: life and death, light and shadow, the feminine and the masculine. For us, it represents the dialogue between past, present, and the realm of time that has not yet arrived. Curiosity drives us to question everything, to explore new materials, new forms, and new technologies, while continuously revisiting ancient methods and forgotten crafts. This space between innovation and tradition, between the known and the undiscovered, shapes everything we create; the space in between differing ideas that, when merged, become something singular.

Your work carries a quiet sensuality — tactile, restrained, yet emotional. What sensations or memories do you want people to feel when they encounter your pieces?

Behind our work lies extensive research: material, archaeological, geometrical, and historical. Each piece begins as an investigation and becomes a story (or vise versa). The conceptual process often remains deliberately arcane, because we want people to connect through their own perception and reinterpret ours. That exchange of perception, that dialogue between what is revealed and what is felt, is where the sensuality of our work exists. It’s once again a reflection of duality and curiosity opposites meeting in a shared state, space or emotion.

Heritage often lingers in the subconscious. How does where you come from — your roots, your cultural memory — manifest in your forms and materials?

In every possible way, Mexico is engraved in who we are, how we grew up and where we have been. Our roots and culture are always present in what we do, from the use of local materials, to traditional craftsmanship and the archaeology that shapes our visual language. Mexico is a culture both rich and hybrid, constantly merging influences from past and present. This continuous reinterpretation of where we come from and where we are going is a key source of inspiration for us.

Your pieces often feel like fragments of something larger — almost archaeological. Do you begin with a clear idea, or do you let the material lead you toward discovery?

We don’t follow a defined process when designing; it's guided by intuition more than structure. Sometimes a piece begins with a story, a place, a material, a shape, even a scent or a memory. Each piece is a translation of who we are and how we experience the world. It’s less about creating an object and more about uncovering something that already exists; a fragment waiting to be revealed through form and material.

Design today can be loud, fast, and self-referential. What does timelessness mean to you in a world obsessed with the new?

We believe timelessness lives in craftsmanship and story. Nothing is ever truly new; everything is a reference, a memory, a reinterpretation, an opposing perspective. For us, timelessness means creating with such intention and quality that time itself becomes irrelevant. You can see it in the marks that remain: a glass of wine staining the wood, a scratch on a surface, and the body impressions that over time create character and history. These traces are stories engraved forever. When materials speak, they transcend time. Strong materials and strong stories, that’s where timelessness exists for us.

If you stripped everything away — function, material, even beauty — what remains at the core of your practice?

At the core of our practice lies the pursuit and curiosity of the raw, the true, the essence and the imperfect perfection of our universe, which we perceive and communicate in the only way we know, Siete.
